Mulberry Waffles

Whenever you see this on the sidewalk

you can make these

Mulberries are in season and they're staining sidewalks and rugs everywhere.  My Mommy taught me never to eat stuff off trees but this is an exception.  A yummy exception.  Just make sure you're properly identifying them and not just depending on the sidewalk stain to guide you.

There are some hazards to the collection of this yummy fruit that nobody else in my neighborhood is eating.  Transplanting seeds and staining fingers are common.

Just toss them into a waffle mix and throw them on the old waffle maker you picked up for $1 at a local yard sale.

Butter, maple syrup, chocolate sauce, and sugar are my favorite toppings.  Together.  Sure it masks the taste of the berries but it's one way I can get away with straight sugar without certain people getting upset at me.

Grandma tells a story of three-year-old Dad blowing up like a balloon when she tied him to a mulberry tree.  Allergies.  Be careful.

They're called "moras" in Spanish and that purple stain they leave gave rise to "morado" - the name for that distinct color.

Next time you see that stained sidewalk, try a yummy mulberry.  Take some home and you won't have to pay $5.99 for that tiny plastic box of 23 organic raspberries.
