Those excess neutrons released can split other nuclei and cause a chain reaction if there is a high enough density of fissible material - a "critical mass."
Uranium-235 or Plutonium-239 are fissible isotopes.
In the case of uranium, the fissible isotope is extremely rare less than 1% of all uranium - and it must be "enriched." These enrichment plants are what we try to limit for countries like Iran and North Korea.
Enriched U-235 was used in "Fat Man."
Plutonium does not occur naturally. It has to be created in a lab or a reactor.
Plutonium-239 was used in Little Boy.
